Marseillan, Herault

Marseillan is in the Bas Langedoc region of south western France and gives on to the Basin de Thau on the Mediterranean coast about two hundred kilometers from the Spanish border.

History and Culture

Marseillan is one of the oldest villages in France. The area was originally settled by the Greeks more than 2500 years ago and was a very active Roman commercial centre.  Julius Caesar fought one of his major battles in his conquest of Gaul close by.  Nearby Montpellier has a major university, theatres and book shops.   Nimes, the Pont du Gard, Aigues Mortes and many other tourist attractions are a short drive away.

Village History

An excellent English language source of Marseillan history are Mike and Patricia Worsam who are permanent Marseillan residents. Mike conducts tours of the village and port in English (from 1030h to 1200h: Wednesday the village, Thursday the port) . The tours are free but Mike will accept donations that go to local charaties. He can be reached at marseillan.historique@orange.fr. Mike and Patricia have also collaborated on a short history of Marseillan in English that can be purchased locally.
